Make Do and Mend: At Home, with suggested walk around Tilbury

Wherever you are, we invite you to make a Mandala between 12-27 September and share with us using #T100Calling or in our Facebook group.
Today, the mandala theme is Make Do and Mend! Upcycling, turning broken things into beautiful things. We invite you to carve out some time at home to create a space for yourself; reclaim an area in your home to get creative with ceramics, glass or other neglected items.

A suggested walk route is below if you’d like to follow it yourself in your own time. The route is a gentle walk around Tilbury Town, beginning in a residential area and stretches to the edge of the town. As you cross the cattle grid along the new Fort Road there will be views of the farmlands and the Thames that run alongside it. Arriving at London International Cruise Terminal there are wonderful views of the impressive cruise liners that rest there and of Gravesend just across the river.

- 11:00 – Walk Begins
- 11:10 – Our Lady Star of the Sea Church
- 11:20 – Tilbury Hub
- 12:00 – Walk ends, arrive at London International Cruise Terminal
- 12:00 – 12:30 – Optional return walk from Cruise Terminal to Tilbury Town

- Distance: 2.5miles (optional return walk adds an extra 1 mile)
- Grading: Moderate (optional return walk is Easy)
- Terrain: Pavements and countryside footpaths, one section has uneven ground. This route is not accessible for wheelchairs and pushchairs.

Parking
Parking near the start is on the corner of Calcutta and Montreal Road which is a 10 minute walk to meeting point 1 and a 5 min walk to meeting points 2 and 3. If you park here at the start of the route there is an optional 30 minute return walk at the end of the event.
Parking near the end is at the cruise terminal. If you wish to have your car at the end of the route you can park there before the walk begins and walk back into town via the optional return walk 30 min route.
Accessibility
This walk is accessible for wheelchairs and pushchairs for the most part.
The entire route is paved but just after the cattle grid there is a fairly steep hill and work being completed on the road which makes that area not accessible. Towards the end of the route it crosses a main road and the pathway becomes a lot narrower which could cause some accessibility issues. However, the start of the route in Tilbury Town and the end event at the Cruise Terminal are accessible.

You need to choose walks within your capabilities; especially if walking in a self-directed manner. If walking with us, our walk leaders are experienced but must take your word that you are sufficiently fit for the grade of walk you have chosen.
Due care has been exercised in organising the walks, however Kinetika, the funders and associated partners of the project cannot accept liability for loss, accident or injury caused to any person following the routes, especially unsupervised. Participants under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
Thurrock 100 walks are of different lengths and on different terrain. Some are mainly on footpaths, and others mainly on footpaths where ground may be uneven. If this walk doesn’t suit you, there is probably another one that will.
What to take
Be prepared! Face masks are advisable if you wish to use public toilets and essential if you wish to use local shops or are travelling via public transport.
Please ensure that you are properly equipped for all walks. The weather can be unpredictable so bring waterproof clothing and/or sun hats and sun cream – it’s best to be prepared for everything!
Walking boots/shoes are recommended, but otherwise please wear suitable and comfortable footwear- best to leave open-toe sandals or high heels at home. Make sure you bring a packed lunch, if necessary, and plenty to drink.

We will be taking photographs and video of this event to promote and celebrate the project in print and online. If you attend an event and do not give consent to be photographed or filmed, that’s absolutely fine, please let a member of the Kinetika team know on the day.
