Renewal:In Your Garden or Street, a suggested walk route from Ockenden to Little Belhus Country Park

Sat 26 September 2020

Read our COVID-19 UPDATE HERE

Booking for this walk is now closed but you can follow the route to do the walk on your own.

Wherever you are, we invite you to make a Mandala between 12-27 September and share with us using #T100Calling or in our Facebook group.

Today, the mandala theme is Renewal, turning landfill into a community park, where insects and wildlife can thrive again.

We invite you to make a mandala to create a natural habitat in your own garden.

Download your free Mandala Activity Pack here for inspiration.

Click the Renewal Gallery to see mandalas made by the T100 community in preparation for this theme.

At Little Belhus Country Park we’ve been inspired by the work of Rural Arisings and the Grass Roof Company and we’ve been designing a permanent mandala that would become a new insect habitat; using recycled brick, concrete and cement.  Little Belhus Country Park is a wonderful story of renewal; a capped landfill site that is being transformed into a country park.

A suggested walk route is below if you’d like to follow it yourself in your own time. The route follows a gentle walk around the north east part of South Ockendon and you’ll see a variety of buildings, from modern day to the church which was built over 800 years ago and pass through a variety of landscapes – from modern housing estate to farmland.   You may be surprised when you take a closer look at a place many people drive straight though!

Participants under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

Thurrock 100 walks are of different lengths and on different terrain. Some are mainly on footpaths, and others mainly on footpaths where ground may be uneven.  If this walk doesn’t suit you, there is probably another one that will.

What to take

Be prepared!  Face masks are advisable if you wish to use public toilets and essential if you wish to use local shops or are travelling via public transport.

Please ensure that you are properly equipped for all walks. The weather can be unpredictable so bring waterproof clothing and/or sun hats and sun cream – it’s best to be prepared for everything!

Walking boots/shoes are recommended, but otherwise please wear suitable and comfortable footwear- best to leave open-toe sandals or high heels at home.  Make sure you bring a packed lunch, if necessary, and plenty to drink.
