Grays to Purfleet

By Editor · On April 28, 2015

Map:  Thurrock100-Walk3 11 July

This is a walk from Grays to Purfleet along the river.  The walk departs from Grays station, passing the wharves and jetties that recall the area’s importance as a trading centre.  Then you make make your way along the river, passing the famous graffiti wall and visiting St Clement’s Church which featured in the film Four Weddings and a Funeral.

Then you continue along to Purfleet station and the Purfleet Heritage Centre before visiting the RSPB Visitor Centre. Finally you can loop back to the High House Production Park where the Royal Opera House’s set and costume making is now based and can occasionally be viewed on open days.

You don’t need to walk the full route (about 10 miles) if you don’t want to – there are a series of pick up/drop off points clearly indicated for each walk which are in green below. The original approx walk timings are below for your reference. The main points are:

  • 08.00       Leave Grays station.
  • 09.00       See St Clement’s Church, which featured in Four Weddings and a Funeral.
  • 11.00        See the the Grade 1 listed magazine store at Purfleet Heritage Centre (6 miles).
  • 11.45         Visit the nationally acclaimed and now restored marshland landscape of the RSPB Rainham nature reserve, including rifle ranges (6 miles).
  • 12.30          Leave RSPB Visitor Centre (8 miles), do you know about the history of Purfleet and its links to Dracula?
  • 13.30          Arrive at High House Production Park (10 miles)
