Bata Wayfinder Shoes
Look at these shoes. They look smart enough. Shiny leather, sensible shoes.
Turn them over, and you can see the surface of the moon. The treads are craters, and a rubber astronaut raises a flag. These are Moonshot shoes, made to celebrate the moon landing in 1969. They are called moonshot, because there was no certainty the mission would be a success. As you walk in these shoes, your footprints celebrate that hope and triumph.
Worried you might lose your way? Look at these shoes. Smart black leather, tidy laces. Turn them over and see the treads. Animal footprints. And in the heel, a compass. As you walk in these shoes, you leave the tracks of wild animals, and you can always find your way home.
What do you leave in your footprints? What do you leave behind you as you walk through the world?
From stories told at Bata Heritage Centre Open Day, and writing by students of East Tilbury Primary School.
