Chase High School students show off their artistic talents

16 Year 8 students at Chase High School in Southend have been lending their artistic talents to Kinetika’s T100 walking festival which launched recently.

The festival offers free walks with recipes and sharing food a key element of each walk. Kinetika, the outdoor arts company who run T100, specialises in creating colourful silk flags specifically for locations, taking these on the T100 walks. T100 is now in its fifth year and the theme for 2019 is Welcome to the Kitchen Table and it aims to bring people together and connect communities through a sharing of recipes and food.

With artist and Chase High art technician Sally Chinea, the students have been exploring and researching the many different cultures within their class. Each student has looked at where their family originates from, sharing their different stories, cultures, beliefs and traditions with their classmates. They have investigated food and recipes enjoyed at a special events or celebrations within their cultures. Each student chose one dish that had special meaning to them and then studied the recipe to discover what ingredients were used and where they all came from.

The class had tasting days, trying new foods and recipes then drew the foods and finally used different printing methods to depict their recipe on t-towels, which have their stories printed on the back.

The students’ chosen pieces have been painted on to the silk flags for T100.

All the students work will be assessed by Trinity College and hopefully all will gain a Bronze Arts Award and then the work will be going into the end of year show and could be on display in the Rochford Art Trail

The flags will be seen at the launch of T100 in Grays on 5th July and all the young people who worked on the flags will be invited to the launch and to take part in the walks. The flags will also be carried on the Southend leg of T100.

A full programme of walk routes, start times and locations for T100 walks, can be found here: http://thurrock100.com/2019-walks/

This work on the new flags created in Southend has been funded by SEAT/Forward Motion and the DfT Access Fund.  We thank them for their generous support.
