Hot Cross Buns of Horndon
My Dad wrote my Grandad's speech, for him to say while hanging the hot cross bun. It used to be the oldest person in the village that hung it, but they changed that recently. Now, the Chef decides. I like the idea that this is the new tradition. A new person every year.
After my Grandad hung the hot cross bun, we all had a mouthwatering freshly-baked one ourselves. It was so delicious. In fact, I had two. My Grandad was filmed by a cameraman. Someone filmed someone a long time ago hanging the bun, and they are going to compare the difference.
I heard lots of glasses clashing together, making a tinkling noise. The hammering of the nail into the ancient beam. People crunching on hot cross buns. I smelled their sweetness and yumminess.
I saw the ancient ones hanging calmly from the ceiling. I imagine the crust of years that have passed, the thought of oldness inside them, their memories of every Easter.
I am comfortable here. Many years ago my Nan and Granny may have been here, too. The cars in the car park were different in the olden days. There may have been weapons, when there was a war going on. But there may also have been people singing and dancing, as they are doing now.
